At Camp Jorn YMCA, Black Lives Matter
Black Lives Matter! While some people may be uncomfortable with those three words, we as a country have to believe that statement is true. To that end, Camp Jorn believes unequivocally that Black Lives Matter and we are committed to fighting injustice and racism.
Thousands of kids of all races are able to come to Camp Jorn through a concentrated effort to provide opportunities and scholarships. We recognize the awesome responsibility that has been thrust upon us at this moment in time to make sure Black youth who come to Camp know that their lives and dreams matter. We are invested in being partners in eradicating the injustices they endure.
Our camp community is ready to embrace our efforts and commit to doing better. The Board and staff have created action plans that will include directly engaging Black members of our camp community including campers, parents, staff, and Board members, along with local community leaders. Recognizing the sense of urgency, below are some specific steps to be implemented:
Establish ongoing training for our staff and Board on dealing with issues of injustice and racism
Assess existing policies and practices utilizing a Racial Equity Impact Assessment tool to identify problematic practices and areas for change
Develop strategic plans to address identified issues
Devote meaningful resources in recruiting and retaining more diverse campers, staff and Board
Hold ourselves accountable by measuring our progress towards achieving these goals
Camp Jorn condemns racism in all its forms and stands with all the peaceful protesters to bring light to the injustice of racism and commitment to change. Our mission is to build character, confidence, and community through enriching outdoor experiences. We look forward to the rewards of living in a world of greater peace, justice, and equity.
