Child Care Center at Camp Jorn YMCA Closes
The Child Care Center at Camp Jorn YMCA is officially closing as of April 1st, indefinitely. There is no presumed date for reopening. The future is uncertain for all of our 2020 programs and the organization is taking a critical look at our challenges and opportunities. Camp Jorn YMCA is a not-for-profit charity with a long history of serving kids and families but somewhat limited resources to fend off financial crisis, let alone fast-moving pandemics. We have 68 years of successful operations to carry us forward and we fully expect to continue our mission of building character, confidence and community through enriching experiences. Children need us – perhaps now, more than ever.
The historical success of the Camp Jorn YMCA has always depended on a healthy summer camp program. We have also been dependent on the generosity of our camp alumni and local community. We continue to be hopeful that charitable giving will bounce back but also are realistic about the overwhelming needs that will be considered in a time of a troubled economy.
Please understand we appreciate the need for quality child care in this community, around the state and the country. Camp will need to evaluate the bigger picture. The viability of child care will absolutely be considered along with the summer camp programs. At the end of the day – Camp Jorn is a business and the Board of Directors will have some difficult decisions to make based on overall sustainability. State licensed group child care is a very challenging program. We get it and have lived it for 23 years. Trust that any decision to reopen or permanently close our center will be made after considerable thought and analysis.
We value our partnerships and relationships. Please feel free to offer your thoughts and solutions.
